Dong Nai Golf Resort
About
Mature 27-hole layout that remains amongst the region's best
The Dong Nai Golf Resort in Ho Chi Minh City boasts one of the most stunning golf courses in Vietnam, set against a vast lake. Though slightly farther from the city center than some of its counterparts, the mature, scenic beauty and exceptional 27-hole layout (made up of three 9-hole loops, unimaginatively named A, B and C) make the extra travel time worthwhile. While the course was voted the best in Vietnam in 2003, it faces stiffer competition today but remains a standout experience.
The A course begins with a downhill slope towards the lake before taking a sharp right turn uphill towards a well-bunkered green. The following holes follow the lake's edge, and the par-4 2nd presents a challenge with the lake encroaching twice on the fairway. The par-3 3rd requires players to carry over water with a large bunker protecting the left side of the green.
After the forced water carry off the tee at the 5th, a long doglegging par 5, there's no more water to cope with, but narrow tree-lined fairways present their own challenge, especially on the par-4 7th, where trees intrude into the fairway leaving only a narrow gap through which to thread your drive. The final hole on the A course is an uphill dogleg right par 4 that plays to a green protected by sand on all sides.
The B course is particularly picturesque, with the downhill opener playing downhill towards a peninsula green that requires a nervy approach. The long dog-leg par-5 2nd plays around the lake, and long hitters attempting to reach the green in two must watch out for a stream crossing in front of it, with bunkers either side. There's another challenging approach over the edge of the lake required at the 3rd, while the 6th requires yet another water carry on your second shot.
The C course's standout holes include the right-angle dog-leg par-5 3rd, where getting the right distance off the tee is required to open up your route to a green guarded by a substantial bunker in front, and a trio of sand traps at the short 4th leave little room for error.
The 7th hole is fantastic, particularly from the blue tees, with a long carry over water to the fairway leading to an approach shot to a green with a large bunker on the right, and there's time for one more drive over water at the last, which plays up towards the clubhouse.
The clubhouse may seem a bit dingy, but the staff are friendly and the food is adequate. Accommodation is available on site, and for those taking a day off from golf, numerous other sporting activities are on offer.
